About me

I have been in the nursing field for over 20 years and have experience in both clinical and educational settings. I received my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from San Juan De Dios Educational Foundation, Inc. in Manila Philippines, then went on to complete my MSN in Nurse Executive Leadership from Benedictine University in Lisle, IL.

I have served as a clinical nurse in Medical/Surgical, Oncology, Orthopedic, Cardiac/Neuro Telemetry, Progressive Care, and Stepdown units. For the past four years of my career, I have been in the education arena, first as an adjunct clinical instructor, then as a Clinical Coordinator for the Associate of Science Degree in Nursing (ADN) program, and currently, as the Director of Online Nursing Programs for post-licensure RN-to-BSN and Associate of Science in Vocational Nursing programs in a private post-secondary institution.

Encouraging, supporting, and celebrating student success, mentoring and modeling excellence in patient care, and implementing evidence-based practice drive my passion not only for quality patient care but also for teaching and learning in nursing education. I am a member of several nursing organizations and a mom to a beautiful son, Cyrus. In my free time, I enjoy gardening, traveling, listening to music, photography, and spending time with my family and friends.

Activity

My takeaway from this module is that online materials should be suited for both the environment and for online learning. Also, taking the layout of the course content to match the instructor's teaching style.

In my current role, I have definitely played or worn the "four pairs of shoes" - instructor, social director, program manager, and technical assistant. No matter what role I was/am playing, I believe establishing communication between myself and the students as well as providing and receiving feedback is essential in order to facilitate online learning and also have a satisfactory online learning experience.

Whether teaching in a synchronous or asynchronous learning environment, it is important to develop guidelines that must be communicated to students so they understand the process and follow them accordingly. This will also allow communication and outline expectations.

Online learning and distance education has been enhanced significantly, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to this, there have been a lot of technology tools developed and utilized to provide instructors with ways to deliver instructions/education and assist students to continue learning virtually/remotely. It is important to not just utilize tools that are available to the instructors and/or students but to also ensure it allows and enhance the learning process and meets the needs of both the instructors and students.

The characteristics or descriptions of a leader and a manager may be different but I think the end goal and/or vision are the same.
