A leader with a clear vision and passion for her vision can hope to motivate her team with her infectious enthusiasm. However, this is not enough.  External motivators such as hope for a raise or bonus serve a purpose but are also limited in motivating others.  Hopes for promotion are a strong motivator, but realistically, not all members of a team will be promoted - many of them are needed in their specific area of expertise.  What else can be used to motivate employees to maximize their contribution at work?

I enjoyes this course very much.  As the manager of a far-flung team working on many different aspects of an educaitonal website, many of the lessons were very relevant, and I hope to implement some of the new tips I've learned.  I believe that the most important thing I've learned is that clarifying goals and expectations from the launch of a team will help ensure its success, as well as setting up universally accepted practices for appropriate and regular communication.

What helps you keep your virtual teams on-task and effective?

Would you consider it important for team members working on very different aspects of a given project to get periodic updates on progress or changes to areas of the project that are not directly relevant to their responsibilities? On the one hand, it would help a feeling of teamwork to know what is happening and to feel updated, on the other hand, their could be the pitfall of flooding people with irrelevant information, and distracting them from their true responsibilities. Looking forward to your responses.

I agree that the course was an invaluable tool in helping me understanf the regulations and translate them into practive.

Discussion Comment
Our institution does not require an admissions test to all students, but does require that students take a Mathematics Placement Exam to ensure that they are on the correct level and do not need remedial math to bring them up to par. Would this be considered an admissions exam which must completed as part of the admissions process?
