Alexandra, This is a great observation. In post-secondary education, applied subject knowledge should be expected. It is important that we create our curriculum on the basis of the learning taxonomy, to ensure that our students are able to appropriately used their acquired skills. Tremayne Simpson

Pearl, For the most part, are the students voluntarily inclinded to used the Simpro program or do they respond to incentives for participation? We have presented our students with several supplemental learning tools that can effectively assist them with their courses, however the instructors have had a difficult time with getting the students to use the resources in a self-directed manner. Therefore, incentives are usually presented to influence their participation (i.e "extra credit"). Tremayne Simpson

Kevin, I agree that PowerPoint presentations can serve as great tools for instructors. I feel that it is important to limit the amount of text that is included on each slide, so that the students can focus on the instructor and not just the information on the slide. Tremayne Simpson

Diana, I feel that alumni presentations can serve as great motivation for current students in the program. It is also a great idea to have presentations from alumni that are at varying levels of the desired career path (entry-level, experienced, etc.), in order to provide the students with realistic examples of what they should strive for and expect. Pearl, This is a great practice for your students. Also, it gives you an opportunity to clarify objectives, in which the students have trouble understanding. If time permits, you can review the learning objectives in the final course section and discuss how they were accomplished. Tremayne Simpson

Kevin, Although it is a cumbersome activity, I find that it is also important to list the accompanying learning objective on the project/activity guidelines sheets. This allows the student to understand the importance of that activity and how it relates to the learning outcomes of the course. Tremayne Simpson

Jeremiah, I agree. It is a good idea to assign an activity/project for your students that will enable them to undertand the correlation of course expections and student learning outcomes. They should also be able to understand the sequences of courses in a program of study and how they relate to their career goals. Tremayne Simpson
