Activity

Very good idea, Harry. It is very possible to involve the entire school - staff and students in placement and publicizing your school. This could be a once a year campaign set up like a contest with goals in different categories such as number of new employers, new job listings, new places to talk about your school and its career training, and more. There can be different goals for the staff and students. Thanks, Susan
Hi Carl, Really good points. Career services does impact on every department. For students there should be courses and/or activities to complete to get work ready. And in each classroom there is definitely opportunity to talk about how the skills learned apply on the job. Every day the students' eyes need to be on getting ready to get a job and to be successful at the workplace. Thanks, Susan
Your response is so great, Kimberly. This is exactly the great results expected when Placement stays in close touch with Admissions. The admissions staff needs lots of details about placement success. Also they need to know exactly what the student will do to get ready for a successful interview. New students have two major fears. Are they going to pass the courses and will they get a job? Their anxiety needs to be lowered with information and placement information results. Thanks, Susan
Hi Julian, Sounds like you work closely with all the staff at your school to ensure that all the needs of the students are met. It's important to know and anticipate student concerns and anything that can impact on retention. It seems you are also letting your admissions department know about placement results. Yes, results does speak for itself. Thanks, Susan
Hi Julian Nice idea about the pre grad luncheon. It's another thing that students can look forward to as they are nearing the end of their studies. This time, by the way, is often when there are a lot of drop outs. The "entertainment" for the lunch can be the mock interviews where everyone can get a laugh or two and learn from each other. Thanks, Susan
Hi Judith, It is amazing how easy it is to get out into the community. Just takes a bit of planning and organzation. Your employees are probably members of a lot of civic, business, and social groups. So they can easily bring the message about your school to their members. Ideally there is at least one person on staff to coordinate efforts and provide information materials to hand out. thanks, Susan
Sounds great, Judith. Looks like you have the budget process working for you. You are giving specific goals to your managers to justify their budget in terms of student outcomes. That's great. They will be able to show results in terms of $ and student success and satisfaction. Thanks, Susan
Good points, Mindi. We think that there should be an employer relations person on staff. Their main job is to stay in touch with employers and potential employers and the entire community. Find out all the ways that your school can be a resource for the community. Work to meet the needs of employers and they will look to your school for training and placement. It's a win-win situation. Thanks, Susan

Hi Lisa, Good point. yes, that happens a lot. Students enroll at the last minute and miss orientation. However they don't have to miss the benefits. We suggest that they be required to attend the next orientation session even though they are already into the program. Also that they be assigned a coach from the very beginning who gives them a one on one orientation of all the things they missed. A student who enrolls and attends class at the last minute is going to always feel they missed something important that everyone else got. So the personal coach can… >>>

Sounds really great, Mindi. Of course we have a bias to starting placement services at the beginning of training and not even wait until mid point. It takes a while for students to register the fact that placement services are as important as their classes. So we like placement to be part of their activities throughout. Can be subtle and simple like researching about the workplace, hearing about what life is like on the job, speaking to people on the job. Sounds like you have a great program. We always like to see placement start earlier in the life of… >>>
