Very good Maureen. Can you share with us what your school offers the student in the way of employment skills training and at what stages and how? We feel that employment skills training and career awareness should be laced throughout every program. We think that activities should be required and not optional such as completing certain thinking work, writing, research, attending workshops and job presentations, etc. Yes, students need to be aware of the "career" part of their training from the start. Thanks, Susan
HI Christopher, Very good summary. Yes, the placement department should be letting the rest of the school know about job placement results. And surveys are very important. Surveys by email, mail, and even phone follow up. And certainly all instructors and staff should know employment skills to pass along to students. And again good points that most stats can be used to make changes and improvements. Again, all great ideas that are easy-to-implement once put in place. Thanks, Susan
Hi Christopher, We think that companies may in fact get interested in students prior to graduation. That's a reason for externships! Getting students used to what is out in the job market is important. Although we feel that it must be in the field training for. Otherwise there is too much distraction. And yes, students do need to keep up with trends in the workplace and in their field of specialty. Lots of great ideas to keep employment a focus for each student. thanks, Susan
Hi Christopher, This is all really great. Linking students with employers for resume building sounds like mentoring, which is great. And puts students in touch with people who hire. We like the idea of an interview scheudle and required interviews. We like that an instructor or career services person works with the students. And field trips are great. It brings the student right into the workplace to see and feel what it is like on the job. And hopefully impact on retention. All easy-to-implement strategies once put in place. Thanks, Susan
Hi Christopher, Yes - we agreement that career services has to start right away and that it is important to continually reach out to the community and the businesses that hire your grads. We suggest that someone keep in touch with employers and get their updates. Counting on them to do is probably won't happen. We also believe that job openings should be posted on your website as long as that part of the website is password protected. Thanks, Susan
Hi Chuong, That's really a great point. Address the student's concern about the job search in the beginning so they know there is help and likely success. And do that right away. Thanks

Hi German, Interesting situation. Hard to comment without a lot of information. First it is important to understand what is going well with employee hiring, management, and evaluation at your school. Are they happy and satisfied? If yes or if no, what is happening and what can be changed. An HR specialist is great for a school if they first talk with everyone and get an idea of the level of satisfaction and productivity. Only with information and communication can change be made. We suggest that the focus of HR is happy, satisfied employees who are imbued with a sense… >>>

Hi German, You are right that a budget can drive the priorities of a school. It takes a lot of people and a lot of input to create an effective budget. And it takes continually assessing how you are doing. Most important to takes having every employee on staff work with the knowledge and understanding of being efficient to show that expenses are justified. Thanks, Susan

Hi German, Online students and ground students all benefit from similar employment skills and job search training. All students need the specifics of how to write a resume, for example. Plus the confidence to conduct the job search and be successful. There are many tasks and exercises that can be completed on line for both types of students. Instructors can provide feeback and coaching via phone and email. Online students can be taught to use local job research opportunities. Every town has newspapers, professional organizations, companies, and more to contact. Only the specifics change from town to town. For those… >>>

Hi German, Great idea to break down projects into manageable sections. Makes it easier and less overwhelming for everyone. Prioritizing is often key to success. Sometimes when we focus on the top ten tasks, the other tasks lose their importance! One key to success is to get everyone agreeing to the priorities. Otherwise people won't work on what they think is not important. Thanks, Susan
