I realized that just as in an on ground class the shy or reserved students are generally quiet, and overrun by the more confident and often motivated achievers. I see that when the discussion is synchronous the student may be overrun just as in class by the others, while an asynchronous discussion allows them to feel more at ease to express them self and not be intimidated.

I agree Sandy, the 2 way street approach should engender a greater rapport and sense of trust for the student and give insight into any special considerations to the learning process as well as "hooks" that can be used to increase engagement.

I realized that even though I was in the habit of posting a welcome message, usually prior to day one, it would be more effective to also give a brief picture of my background. I usually did this as part of the first class, so now I will utilize my welcome to incorporate a brief version of my introduction. 

 

The online experience has certainly come a long way in just a few years from what I had experienced in past courses. The structure has become more student orientated in a multimedia approach and with more regard to the different learning styles of the individual, rather than a "Stefford" style in which all must be the same. I have also note that access to the instructor and the timely response to questions has moved to a greater importance. I believe that it can still be intimidating for some students at first, however the introductory modules have to a greater degree… >>>
