I thought the difference between policy and practice was interesting  - especially where public and university security are a concern.  Under these circumstances - time permitting I can see that these types of decisions would require leadership guidance.  

 

This module covered the legal requirements and guidelines for the disclosure of student records.  It was informative to understand how universities comply with the annual requirements and meet the requirements for individual requests. It was interesting to see the overlap between personal identifiable information (PII) and Directory information. I can see why some students may opt-out due to privacy concerns.  Honoring these choices are important to helping the student feel safe and respecting their rights. 

 

Understanding what information is deemed private and how to protect it is essential to ensuring student rights.  FERPA also provides legal protections and guidelines that stipulate student access to information related to their education.   However, specifying what is deemed to be a student record and what is not also protects university employees in maintaining records that are not identifying and/or shared.   The use of MUST and MAY here are determinates of how the university should act in situations,  Similarly, the goal of transparency should be honored to the most extent to avoid misunderstandings and the escalation to legal remedies.  Under… >>>
