Clear, posted guidelines in the syllabus or policy and procedure manuals can be a reference when problems arise. Early intervention can protect the learning environment from conflict and prevent escalating problems. Having been a victim of a disruptive intimidator in a previous course, early enforcement of guidelines could have saved much pain and frustration.

In teaching online it is important to reward students with points, according to the assignment rubric to encourage participation and keep evaluation fair and transparent

It is important to get to know the students and let them get to know you and each other. This needs to occur at the start of the course to create a collaborative group learning environment. It also helps students to feel that they are not alone, but have support for their learning.

It is important to understand the CMS, course content, and delivery format to be effective and be able to support students during the course.

Effective classes are well-prepared, paced to keep students engaged and include variety to target different learning styles. Reflection after class and notes to help improve the class next time helps to develop teaching skills for continuous improvement. I've found that asking the students for feedback about what worked well and for suggestions for improvement helps them feel heared and they've shared many great ideas.

It is important to set the tone for the course including learning student's names as part of showing them that the instructor cares about them and their success. Students also need to understand what is required to succeed in the course and that the learning will be useful in their career.

Prepare for interruptions and use notepad to write to do list to be sure you remember to take care of details as promised

 

Students always know if you really care about them and their learning. The 5 Cs help students feel safe and ready to learn and empower instructors to share their authentic selves and enjoy the teaching/learning process.
