Barry, Yes, using a student's name helps build respect and community. And, being proactive is essential. Interesting that you can't call your students. I've never heard of this. Can they call you? Thanks for the input.
Barry, I like synchronous meetings as well. Recording them gives access to all students and also provides an opportunity for students to go back and look at them for remedial purposes as well. Glad you are finding success in this. Thanks for your input.

William, Yes, I have 3 monitors connected to my computer. I love it. I've had two for about 10 years and progressed to 3 recently so I can always have my email or the LMS open on one. Nice job.
Barry, Providing sample documents is helpful for students. If it's a paper, I usually give a template and show them a sample "B" grade paper and tell them they have to do more if they expect an "A." Of course, the rubric lays out the expectations well. Thanks!
William, Being polite is a part of being professional. When we communicate in this manner, the students are likely to see how we are modeling that communication and respond in a similar manner. It's a shame you don't have group projects any more. I would encourage peer reviews on assignments at least. Take a day off from email. You need down time too. Thanks for your input.
Joe, Excellent. We do want to consider the versatility and reliability of the tool. If we are unable to connect with the students, the tool has failed us. Nice job.
Christine, Good point. It's hard to choose. We probably use multiple evaluations all the time without even realizing it. Thanks!
Christine, Being positive and encouraging is the first step whether the students did poorly or they "rocked" the assignment. Making sure, as you said, to help to be encouraged to be more successful is awesome. Nice job.

Thomas, Thanks for asking good questions. We do have to think carefully about our audience, the students, and how to get them engaged in the content, communication and learning process.

Christine, You are right that this is a short amount of time. Your syllabus, as you noted, must give them clear direction. The synchronous meetings are definitely helpful to you and your students in building that relationship. Thanks!
