Brinda, You provide some very important points for discussion. I am like you and believe in rubrics. They are so essential in evaluating student work. Your other points about being flexible and taking time to provide detailed feedback is essential to provide for individual feedback that is meaningful. Well done. Thank you.

Gayle, You are right on target with your list of three important things to consider. Keeping students attention online is difficult at times, so a variety of tasks plus reinforcing course outcomes/objectives is a must. Thanks!
David, I totally agree. I just finished a peer review for a colleague who is new to teaching online and I think we both learned something. It's good to see how others set up online courses, communicate with students, etc. to get new ideas. Thanks!
David, I like the way you organized your answers. This leads me to believe that your online course is probably organized as well. ;-) I also like they way you tied all of your answers together. Feedback is important and should be tied to objectives and be timely. Thanks!
Rachel, Yes, with a Web site or course management system students can provide important information. It is helpful it is anonymous and research has shown that students will provide more comments in an online format instead of face-to-face. Thanks!
Rachel, Correct. Simply providing feedback is not enough. It must be meaningful and provide students with feedback to help them excel in the course. Assessment is not something you do to your students, but with your students. Excellent.

Rachel, "CLEAR" is the key word. You are right. And, if you don't communicate, your teaching evaluations will not be good. Organization and timely feedback many times go "hand in hand" and with good organization you and your students know where to go for feedback and their grades. Thanks!

Rachel, Yes, knowing what your students know (diagnostic assessment) is an excellent way to know how fast you can teach the material or what you may need to spend more time on. Organization is key as well. When you are organized in your teaching and your course is organized, you help your students by serving as a good role model. Nice job.

Martin, End of course evaluations are an excellent way to get students to provide feedback. I always tell my students to tell me at least one thing I can do to make the course better. It's important to get that feedback during the course as well (formative) and not just at the end. The Start, Stop, Continue method is good for such feedback. Two to three weeks into the course simply ask the students: What should I start doing? What should I stop doing? What should I continue doing? You'll be surprised sometimes on what feedback you may get. Thanks… >>>

Martin, It's important to consider timing and explain the timing to the students. How quick can you really provide feedback. Many online instructors use the rule of 24 or 48 hours. But, communicate whatever your rule is to the students. Begin positive is essential and making students feel as though they are getting individual feedback is important. This is difficult when the online classes get really big, but try your best. Thanks!
