Beth, Do you pass on the students' comments to the students? Also, if you are getting the same comments about structure or requirements by the school, I would put that information in the syllabus the next time and explain to students these cannot be changed through you. But, they should have a contact to provide this information. But, this keeps the complaints to someone else and doesn't then impact your evaluations. Thanks!
Beth, Nice job. I have students do this as well. I group the students and assign one group per week to be in charge of doing this for a themed discussion.

Beth, Have you tried what I do? I tell the students NOT to email me, but to post their questions on the FAQ discussion board. I give minimal extra credit to students who answers other students' questions. This works well. I do, however, check the FAQ every day (M-F) and answer anything or clarify anything not already answered within 24 hours. I have online courses with over 200 students in the class and my email overload has drastically reduced. Secondary questions are typically answered by the same student who answered the first question. I have also required self- and peer-evaluation… >>>

Beth, Ahh - you are so right! We don't want to spoon feed the students, but give them appropriate criteria so they can understand the expectations and move forward toward the learning outcomes. Thanks!
Sabahudin, Brainstorming with students is a good thing. When you involve students, they think more critically about the assignment/project, etc. Thanks for your input. Dr. Tena B. Crews
Sabahudin, Right. The criteria are essential. Without appropriate categories and criteria, the rubric will not be as beneficial to the students or instructor. Thanks!
Sabahudin, Can you not edit the rubric? A rubric that does not assist the students in understanding the expectations, assess the assignment/project with appropriate criteria and help you assess how to help the students improve, it not a good rubric. See if you can at least providing some input into the rubrics. Thanks!
Discussion Comment
John, Right on! I like that you noted the students can use the information to improve. What a great tool.
Discussion Comment
Sabahudin, Nice job. Rubrics are good for all types of assessment. They help both the students and the instructor.
Discussion Comment
F. Javier, OMG - You have to try rubrics. They provide guidelines for the students so they understand the expectations and the assist instructors in assessing their students. Thanks!
