"According to the course work:

Workload management strategies can help online instructors be more efficient when they:

  • Prepare the course;
  • Establish a teaching and social presence;
  • Maintain policies and procedures;
  • Engage students;
  • Assess students; and
  • Revise the course."

I hope that helps!

I'm just wondering about the perception of diffirent online products and the administrative workload. I have taught in Blackboard and Webstuday.

My Blackboard classes come mostly pre-loaded with assignments, tests, and discusssions. I do have to load in announcements and discussions.

I have created the class in Webstudy. It required a lot of time to set up, but once it was done it was DONE!

Any thoughts?

I encourage students to try to budget their time. Having been a student, holding down a job, and running two households, I know that with some practice, you find time. I also have found that once an obligation of a course is completed, I suddenly have free time on my hands. Sharing that information with students helps them to buy on to the concept that if school can't come first, it should still be a high priority!

Related to posting in discussions: In my online classes we must "sandwich" a comment about the student post, reference something new, but related to the student post, then ask a question about the topic. This then generates a response. It really keeps the discussions flowing! This also works in the workplace!

With summative assessments, students are evaluated upon completion of the work. Students focus is on the final product. With formative assessments, students are evaluated during the work process. They focus is on improving the process. One of the dreaded high school "state tests" would be a summative assessment. There is some controversy over their value. What else could we use to measure students in a meaningful way? Ms. Cressman

You make this sound interesting. I think I will take this session next!

I try to allow some time for questions. I also ask students to email me about questions before a live class so we can share the answer with others.

Sometimes you have to let students know that in order to accomplish everything and make the best use of class time "we have to move on" but perhaps we can chat more about your (dog, cat, sister....fill in the blank) issue later.

Good time management seems to be a key factor in stress reduction.
