when given a chance, I use humor in my examples of past experiences.  It shows the professional humor that goes along with our field.

If I procrastinate and don't use lists then I feel unorganized and off my game. My students have caught on to that in the past. Saying things such as "you don't seem yourself today". I use lists, highlighters, sticky notes, etc... whatever it takes to keep my organized and one step ahead. At work for my office, lectures and even at home for myself and my family.

The attention we can show our students to help with retention

It's always good to do the right thing for our school and students. If we as a school, instructor(and company) do the right thing then our students will fall in line to do the right thing and a great reputation will follow, just with that being done.

Instructors need to be organized and prepared for their classes and students. I always try to be a step ahead. In drawing up my lesson plans, I try to have more information to go over (rather than less)and I also try to have an outline for lab time.
A few things that I have done in the classroom to help adult learners... If I noticed that some were uninterested or even falling asleep, I walk around the class and have more of a topic discussion than lecture or take a break from lecture and start lab for participation,to have them up and moving about.
Learning a new career or even new material for that matter is a difficult task for most. Trying to learn with a disablity (a set back)can prove even more challenging. If I had a student just let me know what I could do for them as an instructor to help, I would give it my all just to be able to see them suceed.
In presenting a lecture I have items to present to go along with the topics. (a mini show and tell, before the labs) I try to present the material so that hopefully all sences will be met for the difference in the way students learn.

I like to lecture for the first part of class and then move to a small group for lab. It seems to work for the hands on part of the course and the students participate more in lab. After a break (in which some become tired) my students appear more interested in the material.
Moving around the class room helped me with eye contact and interaction with my students. The 2-3 second rule is a good one to make sure they were understanding the material. Moving about also helps with interaction with students, I felt they participated more and were asking questions.
