About me

Hello Everyone

After many years of dead end jobs with no future, I have found my niche in life and that is teaching. I feel as an instructor I can give something to students that can never be taken away from them, and that is knowledge. In order to understand the student you must first understand the demographics of where they come from. I make it a point to get to know my students, talk with them, and be mentor/guide to their future. Currently I am attending school and enjoying the challenges. Education to me is a never ending cycle of life.

Interests

day trips, reading and doing crafts when i am not studing for my bs degree.

In my class we did an experiment to see which generation would receive the most text and phone calls during the class time. Each student put their name on their phone and put it on a table with their generation noted. Every 30 minutes we would stop what we are doing and take a look at the phone. I found that the Gen X student had the least amount of call, the Gen Y was runner up and the Boomers were the students with the most contact during class. I also teach a 4 hour class. I have found that spreading out a 4 hour lecture into 2 day blocks helps the student absorb the information much better. In addition, we do activities and question and answer sessions throughout the session to keep the students motivated. This also insures the student understand the topic before moving on to the next part of the lecture. As we all know it does take a lot of energy doing long lectures, it is also very taxing on students to sit still that long. Especially when my class starts at 7:00 am and most of my students just woke up.

Being an instructor can be challenging sometimes, but the rewards are awesome. You get an oppotunity to get to know your students learning styles. Adapt your class to meet those needs and have alot of fun doing it. I like to mix and match different styles from hands on to working on the computer to games to test their knowledge. I have grown as an instructor by understanding how others learn.

When creating groups there are two different ways I have found work for my students. Depending on how many students are in class. I put that many colored envelopes out with numbers from 1-6 in individual colored envelopes. Each person with simular numbers group get together and form a team. The second way has been to group equal number of new students with an equal number of existing student. This forms a more versatile team. Both ways have created great outcomes.

When teaching, I make sure that I rotate my line of vision thoughout the classroom. This method also works to ensure that all students are understanding the topic.
