About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Great. I think that by being prepared we also demonstrate to the other party that we're willing to consider their viewpoint & not just ours. Ryan
Great & I think we have to be careful how we convey our experience & training knowledge so as not to damage our credibility. Ryan

I think you could say that both coaching & managing have the potential to bring out the best in individuals, it's just a different best. As you said, managing may help bring out the best in production, where as coaching may help in inspiring that person to push themselves further. Ryan
Discussion Comment
Absolutely. A coach can also help by asking thought-provoking questions to move the employee further along in their thinking. Ryan

Great summation. I also think that a coach is more interested in the other person's development, whereas a manager ultimately is accountable for getting results. Ryan
You are absolutely right. I especially like your summation of knowing both sides of the issue & being able to talk intelligently about it. This not only prepares you but demonstrates to the other party that you have taken the time to understand where they are coming from. Ryan
Building on your idea of knowing your audience I would also emphasize knowing agenda: time of day, what precedes/follows you, what else have they discussed, what potentially is their frame of mind, etc. Ryan
You have nailed the concepts behind the "positive" forms of leadership that have gained in popularity over the last few years. Beginnign with Burns' work on transforming (later transformational) leadership many have turned their attention on leadership that truly transforms & helps all to feel that we are doing or achieving something worthwhile. Excellent observations. Ryan
Susan, Could not agree with you more! I think it is interesting that many of us want to ignore the "politics" that exist in organizations but like it or not, it's there. I feel servant leadership is an excellent approach. Many feel this means being a doormat, but actually it is the idea of meekness or power under control. Always seek the higher ground. Ryan
Terra, Great observation & great application of negotiation concepts to everyday use. Too often we relegate these skills to negotiating a deal in a boardroom rather than in our dailiy interactions. Ryan
