About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Amy, I apologize for the delay, I'm in the process of moving. Great ideas regarding understanding your audience. I believe if you follow your suggestions you will definitely demonstrate applicability to them. Ryan
Richard, Great ideas. Recently I was in a workshop & the facilitator encouraged us to always go back (in these situations) to talking about the impact of behavior. Stating what you observed (as you said)& asking the employee what they think the impact of their behavior was & is this the impact they want. This helps avoid blame & having a conversation about impact. Ryan

Richard, I love the analogy between playing chess & gardening. I think you are absolutely right, managing is very similar to chess with being able to direct movement. And I love the analogy to gardening for coaching. I may have to use that, with due credit of course! Ryan
James, Some great, practical & immediately useful ideas. I think rehearsals are a great way to prepare & I also always advise to make sure that rehearsals don't cause you to become too rehearsed sounding. Audiences seem to really respond to a nice, conversational approach. Ryan

I completely agree with your thoughts, especially noting the difference between managing & coaching. Both are very important skill sets & are needed but they are distinct & unique. Ryan
Great ideas Rachel! I especially like your comment regarding preparing the coachee for the coaching session. I'm afraid too often managers "spring" a coaching session on the coachee & then it feels more like a "gotcha" situation or a reprimand rather than an attempt to help someone improve their performance even more. Thanks, Ryan
Judy, I apologize for the delayed response, I was out sick the last few days. Great insight. I completely agree with the need to get to know coachees as individuals & also helping them to come up with answers & create ownership. Keep it up! Ryan

Good observation. I think you make a great point with the comment that coaching is helping a person achieve a better outcome than they are currently getting. I think an important part of this is helping them to discover their own best path. Ryan
Great points. I believe you are absolutely right regarding the fear of change being a huge reason for resistance. As I was doing some further reading regarding change recently I came across the statement that people do not truly fear change, but they fear loss. I found that very interesting & I believe true. We fear that this change means I lose something: prestige, salary, job, security, etc. Anyway, something to think about, I found it interesting. Ryan

I think this is a good distinguishing between coaching & management. To me coaching is more of the "leadership" of people vs the managing of tasks & things. I think you captured this in your response. Great job. Ryan
