About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Melissa, Great points, especially about the side-bars, not only are they distracting but they are rude to both presenters & other listeners. Do you have any favorite ways to reduce these? Ryan

Thanks Bo. With your "unreasonable goal" I see a common problem: the use of "buzz words" or "high powered" words because it looks good on paper. But when we use common down to earth words we find them easier to measure & achieve. Ryan
Great comment Marc. Too often, when we are supervisors, we fall into the trap that I have to have all of the answers. Instead, as you observe, we need to spend much more time listening. Ryan
Yes the more you can present, even though you may not enjoy it, the more comfortable you will become in front of a wide variety of audiences. Ryan
Great definition & I would always encourage coaches to do more listening than sharing. Definitely look for the opportunities to share, but make sure you maintain focus on the other person. Ryan

Great synopsis & I would add that coaching is willing to set aside, temporarily, the high expectations or standards to let employees really stretch themselves & see what they can accomplish. Ryan
Great idea, how do you maintain accountability throughout the process for all team members so they are ready to collaborate at the end? Ryan
It is also important that the coach helps the other person to develop their own standards & path for reaching their own goals. Ryan
That is a great thing to remind team members of & the more we as supervisors can demonstrate that we are here for our team members the more they are willing to be there for the students. Ryan

Yes and managing is much more about telling whereas coaching is much more about listening. Ryan
