About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Some great points Eric. I think one of the most important things is that the coachee has to be ready to be coached. If he/she is not ready, then I am wasting both of our time. Ryan

I agree that coaching is much more focused on the positive side of things. And I also believe that there is a place for managing. Bernard Bass built upon the work of James Burns & developed the theory of Full-Range Leadership. Within this there are both transactional (managing) & transformational (coaching) leadership. His view was that there is a time & place for both. Ryan
Yes, absolutely! And when we can approach with objectivity & without the emotionally charged stance, we stand a better chance of helping the other person to do the same. Ryan

Thank you John for your comments & I definitely agree with you. If more leaders understood the difference between the two functions I agree that we would see improved outcomes. Ryan
I think I'm with you on this, could you give a little more context regarding what you mean starting from "Known to unknown?" Thanks Ryan
Some great points & I want to highlight a couple of them. First of all, knowing our audience should also be used to guide our tech choices. Is power point overused, underused, appropriate? Should I go low tech, high tech? Also, great point regarding the 80/20 rule. To me this means I need to make sure to repeat the important 20% several times in different ways. Ryan

Well put Holly. It's also important to recognize that not all employees will immediately be open & trusting just because we encourage them to be. It may take some time. Ryan

That is a great line & as you observed, so very important to keep the space between coaching & evaluation. I know it's been emphasized before, but I think it bears repeating. If we do not separate them, then those we are leading will not feel it safe to take risks & push themselves further. When we do this we create an environment of status quo & "safety" which is not always a good thing. Ryan

Yes, yes, yes! Thank you so much for your post Lori, I think you hit it right on the head. Managing & coaching are not mutually exclusive & are best when matched together. Ryan
This is a great synopsis of the effective speaking/presentation process. One thing you said caught my attention regarding getting their attention early on. This, to me, is kind of a lost art as many people just jump into their presentation & skip this very important part. Ryan
