About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Yes, stories are incredibly powerful & I highly encourage you to use them whenever possible. Ryan
Great points. I would add make sure your visual aids truly add to your presentation & aren't a distraction. Also, re: feedback, yes be prepared for the negative & prepared to handle it graciously. Ryn
This is a great place to start with coaching those you lead. Along with this being there to listen to their concerns & helping them to push themselves further than they would normally. Ryan
I agree with this approach given the lack of experience represented on your team. The important thing is to make sure that you are gaining the team's buy in & then as they do gain more experience shifting the process to a more bottom up approach. Ryan
Absolutely & the action of listenting is a very powerful action for a coach to take. Ryan
Yes anytime you can create a shared vision that the whole team contributed to that is ideal. The next best thing is to gather a great deal of input & reflect that input in your vision statement. Then carefully take that vision statement to the team & ensure that they are all on board with it. Ryan
Shannon, Great ideas to have the facts straight & to have observed the employee. Another tool I have used in these situations is the acronym, SBI--situation, behavior, impact. S-situation; describe the situation as you see it happening B-behavior; describe the behavior that you have observed I-impact; describe the impact you feel their behavior is happening & help them to see some possible unintended consequences of their behavior. Hope this helps, Ryan
Great idea, especially the aspect of including visuals & references that are specific to the company or organization to which you are speaking. Ryan
Discussion Comment
Yes, I agree and also want to state that managerial skills are also a very important set of skills to have when in such a position. What we want to make sure is that we do not neglect the coaching/leadership aspect in the pursuit of productivity & results. Ryan
Laura, Great thoughts. And in regard to noting the issue, it's important to share your perspective or the way you see it as that--the way you see it. Make sure that you are helping the other person to see how their actions are impacting those around them. We are not saying they are a bad employee or student, etc. We are sharing with them how their actions are impacting others. Ryan
