About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Activity

John, hang in there. I hope you get a better understanding after reviewing. Dr. Ryan Meers
Marcia, stick to it! I personally think that knowing the correct grammar, spelling, etc of English also helps us formulate our thoughts & ideas better, even if we're not writing them. It teaches us how to structure, very important. Dr. Ryan Meers
Shantel, Thank you for pointing out that having a learning difficulty is not the same as being less intelligent. These students can & do learn, they just may learn differenty from the norm. Dr. Ryan Meers
Alan, I like what you said here, especially your last point. We need to seek to help all of our students as much as possible considering many of them are making some type of sacrifice to be back in school. Dr. Ryan Meers
David, great story. I think this demonstrates how to help these students & also demonstrates that sometimes the best help for them comes from their peers, rather than instructors. Dr. Ryan Meers
Discussion Comment
sheree, I've seen this occur in my courses as well. I've seen diverse groups of students who normaly wouldn't "hang out" become good friends as a result of group work. Dr. Ryan Meers
Emma, these are all great strategies to help ensure that the groups are the most effective that they can be. Dr. Ryan Meers
Jeannette, I've also found that having students grade each other on various aspects of their group participation, including sharing of the work load, can help with this area somewhat. Dr. Ryan Meers
Kimberly, defnitely true. This can also be a great opportunity for teaching students how to deal with these diversities. Dr. Ryan Meers
tameral, great observations. I especially have noticed the "forcing" of one idea or solution onto other students. This can be a great aspect of groups too, as students can learn to value the opinions of others. But clearly they have to be taught how to do this. Dr. Ryan Meers
