About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Renea, I agree with you that this can often be one of the greatest benefits of the group projects as students learn to work in & appreciate the greater diversity. Dr. Ryan Meers
Kelly, this is a great strategy to get to know your students better & also sounds like it helps you in evaluating them & their contributions to group projects. Dr. Ryan Meers
vinny, you make a great point here that I hadn't really considered before. By sharing our experiences we are making ourselves more human & our students may feel more comfortable in talking to us about struggles, etc. Thanks for broadening my thinking. Dr. Ryan Meers
Timothy, I too have found this to be true. It is much more difficult for the students to check out or disengage if I have first connected with them through eye contact. Dr. Ryan Meers
Renea, this is great. I'm assuming that this not only helps your communication but generally helps all aspects of your teaching as it truly demonstrates life-long learning. Dr. Ryan Meers
James, so true that the more technical information can cause us to get bogged down or can bog our students down. Just keep working on those variety of skills. Dr. Ryan Meers
Michele, Thank you so much for pointing this out. One of my pet peeves as a communication person is that often listening is considered a separate skill from communication, rather than part of it. You are communicating just as much when you are listening as when you are speaking. Dr. Ryan Meers
Bakhriya, Those hands on presentations/demonstrations are a great way to keep the students engaged in what we are doing & in what their peers are doing. Dr. Ryan Meers
Alexandra, Nothing can replace credibility which is built upon expertise & knowledge. Dr. Ryan Meers
Frank, humor is definitely a great tool to keep our audience interested & engaged. Dr. Ryan Meers
