About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Roger, Facebook really can be a great asset in our classrooms & for our students to stay connected. I have had some students set up FB pages when working on group projects. It does have to be monitored while in class as you said. Dr. Ryan Meers
Jeffrey, you make a great point here, that they don't even view it as technology. We really show our age when refer to these necessary "tools" as technology. Dr. Ryan Meers
Sara, that is an interesting step by your school. I'm curious, what is the reason for that decision? My school encourages it although it is left up to the discretion of individual instructors. Dr. Ryan Meers
Jeffrey, explaining the why & the real world application of concepts is a key component for teaching Gen Y learners. Dr. Ryan Meers
Stephanie , great practice. Gen Y learners value community & social interaction so the more we can encourage it the better. Dr. Ryan Meers
ellen, I could not agree more. I also agree that the use in class needs to be monitored so it is not distracting, but we must recognize that these devices are as integral to their learning as paper & pens were to previous generations. Dr. Ryan Meers
Navinthran, great observation & thank you for sharing. I think this cross-generational discussion helps all of us learn to appreciate & value the opinions/ideas of others so much better. Dr. Ryan Meers
Sara, it is definitely interesting how many "retro" things are becoming increasingly cool for younger students. And you are right about some of the older students being more comfortable with technology then they realize. Dr. Ryan Meers
Shari, you are so right about this. I have found that mixing lecture with activities/demonstrations seems to help with attention & retention. Dr. Ryan Meers
Sara, I too have found this to be true. One of the things I try to do is balance using new technologies & valuing this, while helping Gen Y learners to appreciate the value of paper books & the learning contained in them. Dr. Ryan Meers
