About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Heather, yes, not only do the examples help to solidify concepts they really do help greatly with retention. Dr. Ryan Meers
Marian, this is so true & it also helps build our credibility because we demonstrate an understanding outside of the four walls of the classroom. Dr. Ryan Meers
Michael, exactly; thank you for nailing the point. I've found the Gen Yers to be full of opinions, but they have difficulty when challenged. I want my students to be able to think through their positions & opinions & defend them & "why" is a great way to get there. Dr. Ryan Meers
Sherri, and I think this demonstrates a great way that they can be incorporated into the classroom without opening a door of temptation. Dr. Ryan Meers
Todd, this is a great point to meet these learners where they are & use that in our presentations. Dr. Ryan Meers
Kelli, this is impressive on the quick turn around & I'm sure the Gen Y students greatly appreciate this immediate feedback. Dr. Ryan Meers
Marian, yes, this generation will tell you that they can multi-task well. And maybe they can. However, I try to show them that this is distracting to those around them. Dr. Ryan Meers
Marian, this is definitely a challenge with this generation. The other part of this is making sure when they do find a solution that they understand how it solves the problem & works. Dr. Ryan Meers
Kelli, yes, while we don't want to try to "techify" the entire class, looking for ways to incorporate the technology is a great way to reach this generation. Dr. Ryan Meers
michael, there are definitely challenges with each generation. Sometimes it points back to the parents of the previous generation. Did the dad's ever take the kids out to the garage & show them how to take the mower apart? Were they too busy in their own agendas? Dr. Ryan Meers
