Communication can be assessed in a class. You can evaluate grammar, timeliness, relevance, justification, netiquette, and contribution. The instructor's guidelines need to be simple and clear.

Faculty have a huge responsibility in making sure their online students are successful. Not everyone learns the same way so different techniques should be used. If a student quits communicating with you reach out. They may have misunderstood something.

This highlighted the importance of maintaining respectful, clear, and consistent communication in an online environment. Establishing expectations early and modeling professional behavior fosters a positive atmosphere where students feel comfortable participating and engaging. I plan to apply these principles by being intentional with my tone, providing clear guidelines, and addressing misunderstandings promptly to ensure communication remains respectful and effective.

Use appropriate communication tools to stay connected with students while creating a more personal and organized online learning experience. Leverage platforms like Teams and Zoom to maintain clear communication, conduct brief check-ins, and ensure students feel supported and know how to reach me when they need assistance.

This module was a valuable reminder to be more intentional when writing or responding to emails. In a distance coaching environment, applying these principles is especially critical for building rapport with students. Coaching is about offering options, motivating, and truly listening, and I look forward to engaging in this process. Effective coaching goes beyond simply providing answers or resources; it guides students to discover solutions for themselves. This approach builds confidence, strengthens critical thinking, and encourages students to take ownership of their growth.

My key takeaway from this lesson is that how we deliver our suggestions greatly influences how they are received. Thoughtful word choice is essential, as the same message can lead to very different responses depending on how it is framed. Feedback should be constructive and supportive. Asking permission before offering feedback can help students feel more prepared and less defensive. Additionally, using “why” in questions can unintentionally put students on the defensive, making them feel the need to justify themselves.

This course reinforced that building a meaningful coaching relationship with a student is crucial. It requires intentional care, genuine empathy, and the purposeful development of trust and rapport. Lasting impact begins when students feel truly seen, heard, and supported.

This session reinforced the importance of effective note-taking and documentation. Key reasons highlighted included ensuring continuity of services, maintaining accountability, supporting quality assurance, meeting legal requirements, and assisting with resource allocation.

It also outlined essential professional and guiding principles for documentation. These include recording a custodian ID, ensuring notes are clear, time-stamped, legible, written in permanent ink (blue or black), and use appropriate terminology. Documentation should be current, accurate, chronological, relevant, and complete.

Additional best practices discussed included maintaining objectivity rather than subjectivity, properly correcting documentation errors, and appropriately managing blank spaces to prevent misuse.

Communication is key in the placement process. Students and employers should know what you are doing and why it is important for them to provide you with the information. Having a process to collect the data is important. You do not want to have the data compromised. You also need to pay close attention to detail when transferring data between systems.
