As part of my introduction to electrical and electronic fuel injection troubleshooting all students are given explicit and implicit instruction in critical thinking in my courses. In my Introduction, students are taught explicitly about critical thinking by using the Paul-Elder framework of critical thinking to define and operationalize critical thinking. The instruction is followed by explicit critical thinking exercises. The critical thinking instruction in my courses are to prepare students to embrace more elaborate, discipline specific, critical thinking required of them in future courses and begins associating critical thinking with the practice and profession expected of  technicians. One of the classes I teach is, for the most part, pure lecture.  Luckily, the subject matter (motorcycle mechanics) is one in which most are highly interested in.  The age of the students varies from teenage to their 50’s; in addition, their mechanical aptitude and experience vary greatly.  Due to their passion for motorcycles, I find generating discussions in the classroom is not a difficult process, even for those used to learning in a more traditional manner (brick and mortar with an orator).  During the lectures I offer many learning platforms and opportunities for instructor-student interaction and I have developed… >>>

Put these words to daily use on tests, homework, worksheets, presentations, etc. Saying “thank you” for an answer shows you hear them and appreciate them, even if the… >>>

This year I had several main goals to help myself as a teacher. First was to revert back to my own personal philosophy as an educator. I believe that the role of educators is to guide students into learning that will serve to help them create their own unique existence and being, and to recognize and practice personal freedom. I also believe that the right conditions must be met in order for learning to occur. In addition, specific behavioral outcomes are important in assuring that learning has taken place. Therefore, I am guided by several schools of philosophical thought, and… >>>

It is my humble opinion, our ability to identify and manage our own and others’ emotions is fairly stable over time, influenced by our early childhood experiences and even genetics. That does not mean we cannot change it, but, realistically, long-term improvements will require a great deal of dedication and guidance. Everyone can change, but few people are seriously willing to try. Think about the worst boss you ever had — how long would it take him to start coming across as more considerate, sociable, calm or positive? And that’s the easier part — changing one’s reputation. It is even… >>>
