Unfortunatley in a for profit environment, one has to treat students like a customer.

I personally do not like teaching from powerpoint. I teach adults and sometimes they feel like it is story time. I usually go through the information first and demo whatever needs to be demoed, then I pop up the powerpoint to touch on key points rather than just read to them what they already have in their hands. I feel it also adds credibility to who I present myself as, the students also seem to feel like I am not just a warm body reading to them and that I really know what I am teaching.

What we do here is, every 3 weeks one of our classes takes their students on a tour of the campus. This is the last class before the students branch off into their electives. The class visits all of the electives and the instructor from each class essentially does a presentation on what the class is about. We kind of "sell" the class, but most of the students do not get the full tour when they sign up, or they signed up from out of state and they have no idea what we offer until after they are here. I have all of my visual training aids, handouts, reference materials, slides ect. ready before the class begins. The students are usually like" this guy is on the ball" and I have noticed that they appreciate whhen you are ready. You will lose them if you are fumbling around looking for your supplies.

I review subject matter as we teach it. Before we move on i like to get the students to answer some questions. If they dont have it we stay on that topic for a while longer.
Unfortunatley lecture is part of the learning procedure. It is all in the presentation. Instead of looking like a civil war photo all stoic and just spewing cirriculum, walk around, have students get out of there seats and see the examples you are talking about(if possible of course, we teach mechanics) Ask questions, use there answers and questions as a review for the others,don't just answer for them. I take votes to see who feels if the issue is correct. and we talk about both sides of the issue and correct accordingly.

you need to find a type of music that everyone in the class will listen to. Also you need to check with your management team to find out if the music you choose is appropriate and legal to play.

In my class we dissassemble and reassemble components that pertain to what we are discussing. Not " inside of this component you will see :blah,blah. Instead its do you see these components.
Just talk to them when they seem distant or preoccupied

it take along time to be good enough to work with students to find out what is causing their problem(s),and come with a solution. always seek help if cannot solve the problem, others may have a solution.
