About me

Activity

This course has increased my knowledge in building rapport with students.  It has allowed me to self-evaulate and explore ideas that will help me to be more effective in the classroom environment.

It is more than reasonable to believe that it takes creative thinking to allow for some disabilities. It has been proven that our culture has embraced people with disabilities. It is pleasant to see that handicap parking spaces have evolved into a much needed social cultural change. Everyone tends to benefit from the use of sliding doors, wider stair rails and halls just to name a couple.
I understand the need for individuals with disabilities to remain as independent as they possibly can. However, I find it hard to watch an individual with an obvious disability who refuses help. If an individual’s disability can put others in danger then that needs to be addressed. Although, some may think it noble for the person to continue to fall due to refusal of help; it appears that this is more of a selfish act than an independent one.
Discussion Comment
I have notice that since I have been teaching a course on critical thinking. I have become more aware of my self-talk and my though process. This helps with instructions. I am able to disclose personal experiences to help the students in recognizing that to think critically is a process and it evolves as we all learn.
Sometimes it is difficult for me to not over accommadate students with disabilities. Logically, I realize that they are in college and desire to be treated as normal as possible. However, some disabilities are so obvious that it pulls on my empathy cord and makes it difficult not to reach out when not asked.
Discussion Comment
I am really enjoying the information that I am gaining. This provides a stress free environment for learning. I have a greater understanding of students rights and what should be provided to them by the institution.
An institution has to be extremely careful in this area of discussion with students. This is such a broad topic that a misinformed faculty member could easily mislead without intentions. It is important that each faculty member and or staff member has a knowledge for policy and procedures as it refers to federal and general aid to students.
