About me

I've been a career educator for over 20 years. I currently serve as the Academic Coordinator for Brookstone College of Business and continue to be active in the classroom as a Business Instructor. My motto is "A student doesn't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." I was honored to receive the Career College Association National Teacher of the Year award in 2001. I just love teaching!

Activity

Hi Kelcena, I use a PowerPoint on the very first day of class to explain to students the purpose of the course, how the course will benefit them in their career, and different types of positions/job that can be done by mastering the course. Patricia Scales
Hi Mark, Hands-on activities are great for promoting critical thinking, and these are the types of scenarios that students will have to deal with on the job. Great way to prepare students for the real world. Patricia Scales
Discussion Comment
Hi James, Well said! It sounds like you are a retention coordinator. You definitely understand retention. It takes the work of everyone with the student being the most important in the equation. Patricia Scales
Hi Amber, You have it! No one knows it all. I have been teaching for 25 years, and I still am learning. I will do just as you have stated when not knowing. Just remember, you know more than your students though. Patricia Scales
Hi Kathleen, Well stated! You have it! Lead by example; practice what you preach! Our students need role models. Patricia Scales
Hi Darrell, Our students really have a lot going on, but we have to teach our students that in the real world you are not held any less accountable for having a family and children. Patricia Scales
Hi Matthew, A stare normally does the trick. Sometimes intimidation really does work. They get it when you stare at them. Patricia Scales
Hi MALCOLM, I love the idea of a project dealing with a loan or mortgage. This type of learning is very practical, and students see how they can use this information. Patricia Scales
Hi Steven, Love it! This is learning as to how it applies to the real world. Students will know exactly what is expected of them in the workplace. You can really test your students knowledge base this way to determine if they are going to be ready to perform in the workplace. Patricia Scales
Hi Fedele, Great way to help students grasp by lecturing, demonstrating and then having the students perform. Patricia Scales
