About me

I've been a career educator for over 20 years. I currently serve as the Academic Coordinator for Brookstone College of Business and continue to be active in the classroom as a Business Instructor. My motto is "A student doesn't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." I was honored to receive the Career College Association National Teacher of the Year award in 2001. I just love teaching!

Activity

Hi Kate, I agree! Peer teaching is wonderful. It is amazing the length that students will go to in order to impress the instructor and their classmates. Some students have a real knack for teaching. Students enjoy learning from their peers. Patricia Scales
Hi Maurice, Role playing is a great exercise to get students to utilize their critical thinking skills. I also love to use case studies, scenarios, mock learning, and peer teaching to get students to utilize their critical thinking skills. Patricia Scales
Hi Kelly, I love how you put this back on the student. Students love knowing that they have been heard. I always paraphrase to make sure I am on the same page with the angry student. Just by listening, the angry student usually calms down. Patricia Scales
Hi Andrea, Great approach. You should never put yourself in harms way with a student. Do exactly as you have done if you think the situation may become too dangerous meeting alone. Patricia Scales
Hi Stephen Dable, Great tactic! I can tell you try to develop a relationship with all of your students. Students will open up more to you if they feel they have a rapport with you. Patricia Scales
Hi Robert, Some students are very competitive and will push hard as well as push others to give their very best so that they can win. It becomes a win-win situation for all because every student tries their best to come up with the correct answer. Patricia Scales
Hi Ziaul, I agree! With no comparison, getting involved is a great teaching method. Students learn so much more and retain more when active learning is involved. Patricia Scales
Hi Clarence, Wow, nice approach. Most instructors do lecture first and then lab. I like your approach, and I can see how it generates more questions. Patricia Scales
Hi Manuel, Listening is key! Simply by listening the student will take a calmer approach. Patricia Scales
Hi Stephen Dable, You have to love guest speakers. They are priceless, and they bring book theory to real life. Patricia Scales
