About me

I've been a career educator for over 20 years. I currently serve as the Academic Coordinator for Brookstone College of Business and continue to be active in the classroom as a Business Instructor. My motto is "A student doesn't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." I was honored to receive the Career College Association National Teacher of the Year award in 2001. I just love teaching!

Hi James, It sounds like you do not let the nervousness control you. Once you get started you are fine. I have been told to suck on a peppermint a few minutes before class starts to help calm the nerves. Patricia Scales
Hi Eunita, Preparation is key! Being prepared helps to put you into more of a calm state. Patricia Scales
Hi Kenneth, Great response! I can tell you do your due diligence to grab your students attention. I like using variation in my teaching methods to keep my students engaged. I use PowerPoint presentations, mock learning, role playing, simulations, games, case studies, scenarios, hands-on activities, guest speakers, group projects, field trips, etc. to make learning interesting and fun. Hi Kenneth, Student/teacher interaction is a must! Rapport building with students carries weight! Students will work hard for you if they trust you and know that you truly care about them and their success. Patricia Scales
Hi Sandra, Students can make good teachers! Every now and then we do need them to teach us the concept to ensure that they really understand. Patricia Scales
Hi Michael, Super idea! Put the responsibility on the students! Students like taking ownership, and you will have a lot of fun doing the lesson this way as well. Patricia Scales
Hi Rhonda, No! Instructors need to know their place. There should be a designated smoke area for both students and one for instructors. People become friends during smoke break. Instructors do not need to befriend students. Patricia Scales
Hi Michael, Some students can really be a big handful, and they think they do not have to take directives from anyone. These are the ones that will also be a challenge to deal with in the workplace. Patricia Scales
Hi Bronzel, Most students are not going to put forth the effort if assignments are not followed up. Patricia Scales
Hi Rhonda, We have to hold students accountable for assignments, otherwise they will not do the assignments. Patricia Scales
