About me

I've been a career educator for over 20 years. I currently serve as the Academic Coordinator for Brookstone College of Business and continue to be active in the classroom as a Business Instructor. My motto is "A student doesn't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." I was honored to receive the Career College Association National Teacher of the Year award in 2001. I just love teaching!

Activity

Hi Christine, A great way to get buy in from students is to take them on a field trip to validate what they have been taught in the book. Students tend to better understand when they can actually see it. Field trips put book theory into real life. Patricia Scales
Hi Fred, Students will buy in when they understand how the course pertains to what they are studying to become. Patricia Scales
Hi Angela, When students are asked questions they tend to begin to pay attention because they do not like being put on the spot. When a student is asked a question they want to give the correct answer in front of their peers. Patricia Scales
Hi Corey, I love what I do for a living as well, and it makes me so happy when students are succeeding, and I know that lives are being changed. Patricia Scales
Hi HAROLD, Actually I love your perspective and professionalism. Educators should emulate your ways, and we all will serve as better role models for our students. This is the way educators were back in the day. We need to go back to some of these old ways so that students will have someone to look up to. Patricia Scales
Hi Shanika, I concur! The student/instructor relationship should be strictly professional. We as educators must lead by example. Patricia Scales
Hi Brian, Students really do feel a sense of importance when they are addressed by their courtesy title. I love to stand when I teach due to being able to feel in control and promoting great energy. Patricia Scales
Discussion Comment
Hi LE, I concur! Listening is key! We as educators must learn how to listen without interrupting. Sometimes people just simply want to be heard. Patricia Scales
Hi Daniel, Love it! I can certainly tell how your students thoroughly enjoy this activity, and not only are they learning, they are having mega fun. When students have fun while learning, they really retain more of the information. Fun learning is an easy way to recall information. Patricia Scales
Hi Glenn, Students learn better from visuals. Most of our students are visual learners. Visual aids give students a better understanding. Patricia Scales
