About me

I've been a career educator for over 20 years. I currently serve as the Academic Coordinator for Brookstone College of Business and continue to be active in the classroom as a Business Instructor. My motto is "A student doesn't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." I was honored to receive the Career College Association National Teacher of the Year award in 2001. I just love teaching!

Activity

Hi Darnell, A system has to be put in place to deter cheating. Students will do things that are out of their character when they are not prepared. Patricia Scales
Hi Frank, Students have to learn that sometimes they have to conform to the way. In life they will quickly realize in the real world they have to learn how to adjust to other people's ways. Patricia Scales
Hi Sara, You are right! Be professional with your students, not chummy with your students. Chumminess sends out the wrong impression. Patricia Scales
Hi Sean, Nicely stated! You can be friendly to your students, but do not befriend your students. Students need role models. Patricia Scales
Hi Ashley, We should be the professional that we want our students to become. We definitely should lead by example. Patricia Scales
Hi Michael, Instructors should only have a professional relationship with their students. Distance is key and should be maintained. Getting too close to a student creates more of a personal relationship. Patricia Scales
Hi Jamie, What do you typically do to manage your classes? I let my students know on Day 1 what the rules are and repercussions for breaking rules. If rules are broken the student will be reprimanded as indicated. Patricia Scales
Hi Julie, Listening is paramount. I have saved many students from withdrawing simply from listening and pay attention to nonverbal cues! You can pick up on signs from students verbally as well as nonverbally. Make sure to do something whenever you find out what is going on with the student. Patricia Scales
Hi Susan, I am not big on humor, however I do make small talk with my students and smile and greet them. I am not one to be sarcastic with my students. I treat my students with a great deal of respect. Students love it when the instructor checks on them by walking around the room. Patricia Scales
Hi Salvatore, Students really do want the instructor to control the class. Everyone suffers when the instructor does not successfully manager their class. Patricia Scales
