About me

I've been a career educator for over 20 years. I currently serve as the Academic Coordinator for Brookstone College of Business and continue to be active in the classroom as a Business Instructor. My motto is "A student doesn't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." I was honored to receive the Career College Association National Teacher of the Year award in 2001. I just love teaching!

Hi Karen, Students love games as a learning tool. Students really do retain more from having fun while learning. Jeopardy is definitely a hit when it comes to games as a learning too. Patricia Scales

Hi Joel, Every student matters, and we need to do our due diligence as professionals to make sure that each student feels a sense of importance. Remember, students are the reason for our work. They are not an interruption to our work. Students come first!! Patricia Scales

Hi Ted, A lot of our students do want to be spoonfed. As instructors we have to set them up for success, but we need to make sure they are learning/retaining the information, and most important of all, they can apply what they have learned. Patricia Scales

Hi Traci, Good idea! Get everyone involved in retention from the custodian to the director. It is everyone's role. Patricia Scales

Hi Peter, I concur! Everyone plays a role in retention. I have known students to get upset and quit due to financial aid or upset with placement. Students can find every excuse in the book to quit. Retention is the responsibility of all. Patricia Scales

Hi Karen, Nicely stated! This is certainly what you would do when you don't know the answer. Students remember what you tell them, and they will hold your feet to the fire. Patricia Scales

Hi E., This exercise is definitely a brain teaser. It really makes one think critically. I am sure it is very interesting with all the various responses students come up with. Patricia Scales
Hi Jennifer, Students really do enjoy group learning, and they especially like hands-on activities. As an instructor we should always monitor our classrooms, regardless if students are working in groups are not. We need to know what our students are doing. Patricia Scales
