About me

Activity

I completely forgot that any information between a professor (faculty member) and one of our counselors (academic advisor) must be included in the student record when it is asked for. Very good course, it is always good to refresh our knowledge and abide to the law. Thanks for such excelent review.

Discussion

Each institution has their own set of culture and way of working with students. What has been an approach that has been successful or suggestion of how to better interact with students?

For example: In my institution, we offer emailing and over-the-phone contact until 8pm as a way to reach those students who work during the day or are less busy during late hours.

Building rapport with students is the best way to encourage them and empower them to enroll and pursue a college program. Having that personal connection and taking out "a number" mentality makes them comfortable and willing to work with you.

The course provides ample information on which we can tailor to various student situations and methods of communication such as in-person or over the phone conversations. I believe it provides the foundation to better undertsanding of how to better assist students in various medias.

One of the approaches that we take to assist students is probing them with questions and getting to the heart of the matter. Having empathy and understanding their point of view is the best way to assist them and avoid call escalation.

Throughtout motivation, painting them the picture of success and what it means for their future.

I visualized our students as people. Some universities treat them like their student id number, I trie to memorize the name of every single student I deal with, and make them feel as part of a big family.

I never thought that I was wasting so much time trying to accomodate in a To Do List, and thinking that I was going to achieve everything that I wrote down on the list the same day. Thanks to the Time Management class now I can do the same but prioritizing the shores. I tried and it is working for me, now I achieving more on my day and I feel that my department is now more productive because this "Little, Tiny detail call time management"

Thanks to the creator of this course.

I agree with your post; In our organization we get regular training but must of my knowledge comes with trial and error. Must of the time the theory behind the training is excellent and a good motivator tool but the reality is that when you try to put it in practice does not apply to the reality of the job.
