Knowing your students' learning style, and adapting your teaching methodology to reach as many as possible of them, allows you to shift from a "one-size-fits-all" mentality to a more inclusive, effective classroom environment. Creating a  more personalized approach to each of your students will improve their participation in class and will boost their academic performance. This, in return, will increase their motivation.

I have always believed that first impressions are very important in life, and teaching is not different. Setting clear expectations from day, without sugar-coating reality of intensity and demand of the course, getting to know your students and getting the students to know you is essential to have fluid communication in class from day one.

Preparation and clear communication of expectations are essential to properly inform the students about what they will be experiencing in your course.

Being an effective instructor goes well beyond your level of knowledge in the subject you are teaching. Preparation, availability, professionalism, respect, authority, are all essential characteristics of a good instructor.

Email is the main form of communication in online classes, but requires the instructor to stay on top of it. Organization, record keeping, and responsiveness are essential to be succesful.

The most important point from this unit is the difference between asynchronous and synchronous in terms of which one to should be used according to the size of the group. Synchronous learning should be used in one-on-one situations while asynchronous learning should be used with the entire group.

Creating a human connection with your students that goes beyond the academic relationship goes a long way. In our field, and in our industry, many of our students come to us in an attempt to acquire a life structure they do not have at home. 

Having a clear understanding of the structure of the course being taught, as well as having a good grasp of the platform being used is essential to be successful and effective as an instructor. Organizational skills will be essential to keep students engagement and an active flow of the course.
