Retention of students begins with the admission process. Using a rating scale and self checks are both good ways to evaluate . The more information a person is given. The more likely they are to succeed.

Getting to know your students individual learning styles & offering this as a way to learn . Encourages retention of material instead of the old style of lecturing.

Bloom's taxonomy can be used in teaching by presenting the goals for the assignment, student accomplishing assignment , and finished grade.  Hopefully along the journey the student with interaction from teacher and fellow students was able to see a reason for their project. How it can help them in the future, and how they have progressed in thinking.

I think learning the students names is very important. I'm just not sure how to learn all of them with so many students.!

I found the suggestions for cheating interesting. In our class, students came up and exposed the cheaters because they were tired of studying their butts off. They hated that the cheaters were getting away with doing nothing for classroom work and tests. Sometimes cheating doesn't pay off!

Dealing with people who are not paying attention I have found out it is best just to walk over and stand by them. If their behavior continues then you can call them out or engage them in the conversation by asking them questions.

Setting the expectations so students know EXACTLY what is expected of them. This is made clearly on the first day of class. However it is important to remind people throughout the quarter of dates and time of assignments that are due. Some students are more invested in their education than others.

I am going to continue to apply storytelling to assist my nursing students in learning their skills.

I love to use storytelling with my students.  Sharing with them the good and bad days of nursing helps them to relate.

I use storytelling in all my nursing labs to help the students remember and relate to the task. Sometimes it makes them understand the importance for doing it and the danger it can cause by not carrying out the task. ie:  Two patient identifier on a patient.
