I also enjoyed the ED 102 course. It made me more conscious of making sure I attempt to include all students in class discussions, and not overlook the quiet students. And even if the students refuse to speak, I need to at least look their way and acknowledge them with a smile or small positive comment.

The section on moving and floating around the room was also one that intrigued me. I try to move, and not pace, because I too have had instructors who nervously pace when they are speaking. I learned that there is a difference in floating and pacing, in being an effective means of communication with students. It also allows you to not just interact with the students but to alos monitor classroom behavior, and identify those students who may need some extra help or attention.

I must say that this is the third and the best one of the courses that I have taken so far. I agree that the information on teaching studnents with learning disabilities was very informative. I especially was motivated by the topic on making eye contact with students. I try to do this with all my students, howver, sometimes I think I focus more on making eye contact with those students who seem to be making more eye contact with me, or nodding in aggreement. It cause me to become aware of my own behaviors, and to be mindful to make sure I make… >>>

The topic on using memorable moments was particularly interesting to me bacause thsi is something that I do in my classes with students but not after I get to know them a little more. Some students are either just shy, or private, and before I use personal examples from what I have learned about the students, I try to learn the students themselves. I still think it is an excellent way to get students to retain information. If you use examples from their life experiences, this is something they can relate to. I also ask students for personal examples, so… >>>

Yolanda,

I have been teaching for almost nineteen years, and as long as you teach, you will encounter students who think they are the real sybject matter experts in the class. They tend to be talkative, and unless you establish some control up front on the first day, those students will control the entire class. You have to be able to politely tell those students that you appreciate their comments but that you need to hear from someone else, or that you need to move on to a different subject. Also, your tone of voice should be not one that is… >>>

Joseph,

It is often difficult to move from being a co-worker and friend into a supervisory role with the same people. If appears you may fear losing a friend. you have to decide if you want to be a supervisor or a friend. You can be both, however, it is a fine line. I would first try to sit down and tell the person of my concerns. It also appears that you feel this person does not have respect for you as a supervisor. I would ask that person what they see yours and their role as. I would make… >>>

I too certainly have to agree to many of you that much of what we learn is through doing. I have been teach for almost nineteen years, and before Istarting teaching at a career college, I thought psychology and sociology at a state community college. Many students had a difficult time retaining what they learned from reading the textbook and lectures. They would cram to learning for the exam, then a week later, if had not made some type of personal association, then they had forgotten it.

When I started teaching IT classes at a career college, I had to make some adjustments… >>>

One of the things that I include in my syllabus is a list of class policies. The policies include evrything from adhereing to the dress code to policies on missed exams and assignments. That way, students know what is expected. Also, in my course outline, I list every class date, and the activity that we will be doing on that date. This includes chapters covered, and exam dates. That way, students know exactly when the exam date is and what is being covered on the exam. This eliminates the excuse that they "did not know we were having an exam."… >>>

I found the information on misrepresentation interesting from a standpoint that many colleges and universities feel they mus put theie institution in the best light possible in order to recruit new students. That being said however, I fell it is a disservice to a potential student to be mislead into thinking that they will definitely gain employment after they graduate from a specific hight institution of learning. I think some institutions walk the line in implying such messages in their advertising. I also think that the recruitment process should uphold the professional integrity of the institution by answering question for protential… >>>
