I've noticed a difference of opinion when it comes to creating lab groups. Some prefer to allow students to choose for themselves while others create the lab groups for the class. Given our lab environment I have found it best to build the groups myself based on personality, ability, understanding of the material, and chemistry. The few times I have allowed students to form lab groups there was a large discrepancy between the speed and success of the top group and bottom group. You need to set your expectations on day one concerning academic dishonesty.  Adhere to your institution's policies and do not be afriad to implement your own.  At times you will have to use a cheating student as an example to demonstrate that it will not be tolerated in your classroom.

Whenever you venture off into a professional experience story, be sure that you can come full circle and relate the story to the subject at hand.  It is upsetting to the class flow when an instructor finishes up a fantastic tale from the field, has the students undivided attention, then has to dramatically shift gears back to the lesson for the day.  Being able to tie it all together seamlessly builds rapport and trust between instructors and students.
