I have asked about the students' course of study and why they are taking the course but I really like the idea of asking for a bio from the beginning. This helps build the relationship between instructor and learner but also helps identify challenges early on so they can be addressed and solved before becoming a huge problem. I also like the idea of keeping a general discussion forum to complement the weekly graded discussions so that students may interact on a more personal level with me and other students.
Students are coming to our classes with a wide variety of experience, internet access and devices. It is a challenge, but necessary, part of the course to try to get everyone onto the same page as much as possible or meet them where they are.

Career Ed Lounge is embedded in over eighty professional development portals serving the career and technical education community. Performance Groups in the Lounge are integrated with related learning opportunities offered on these portals. With a few exceptions, Performance Groups are also publicly available to any member of the Lounge to maximize peer-to-peer learning and performance outcomes.
