I work for a very smart man and his philosophy on student retention is “self esteem”. What he means by this is many students will create any excuse not to attend school and when you remove the barriers they still do not attend. He believes that the true reason they do not attend is their poor self-esteem. These students have esteem issues and have rarely finished anything. Our school is just another effort not completed. It is difficult to quantify his theory but I believe we have all seen it in action. Even more difficult is how to overcome it.

That is a great idea. I could see putting them into groups and having them decide which one they find most effective and most irritating. Nice idea. Paul

I have taken many online courses.  I liked this one because it was well organized and streamlined.  The information was relevant and not repetitive; which drives me nuts.  I also took a couple of the RT classes, those were excellent.

When hiring instructors I feel lucky when getting someone with a drama back ground.  I tell them to get in there and ham it up a bit.  Not Keystone Cops material but to let their passion for the field pour out of them.  I explain this keeps the instructor and student interested in the material and the field.  Of course with the passion should come better retention and that helps all of us.

We have two customers, the student and the employer.  It is important that we retain and train the student in order to please the employer.  Of course being in proprietary ed we do not have any choice.  As we watch the retention numbers dip down we can hear the FEDs howling for our charters.  Retention will always be an issue but by working as a team we hope to improve them.

I liked the first day assignment and ice breaker activities. Looks like we'll be flying some paper airplanes around the room before the first week is over.
