We must acknowledge that each student has various factors that affect their learning. By faculty working together (admission, deans, program directors, instructors), we can encourage our students and aid them by staying on task. We can also direct them with resources that may be outside of "comfort zones" 

Follow guidelines, Keep open lines of communication and be transparent with students and the community.  When there is no trust, it affects everyone

In my experience,  students succeed where they feel the most welcome.  Establishing the trust is important.  Transperency is also vital for students may apply to schools based upon their peers' opinion. I encourage students to  research various institutuions and find the one that's the best fit (financially,  curriculum delivery, location, times, accessibility, etc. ) 

Misrepresentations are common. Though students all learn differently, students (from what I have experieneced) have a mind set that hands on learning guarantees a job vs. traditional school setting.  

Disclosures and representations should both be factual. A representation may be misleading to students. 

I learned that each programs must go through its own accrediation process. The institution itself does not;however,  some employers do prefer the certifications and training come from accredited institutions. 

 

Building  trust with students is key.  We hold them accountable and  have high standards so communiating and  sharing our expectations should be established on day one. 

I believe in  transparency.  I feel that with an open line of communication, students are able to trust faculty and not hesisate to ask questions. We hold high standards and students should know this from the frist day of class. 

 

Over the years, I have found that structuring an online course  in regards to time from day one is best. Most online students balance work, family, and possibly other courses.  Share with students your avaibility at times that best fit you and the student. For example, I'm a morning person so I am most productive between 7 am - noon.  I shared with students that I will review assignments, and reply to any emails  between those times on specified days, eg Mondays and Wednesdays. I also request to allow 48 hours for feedback. As instructors, we also have other responsbilities… >>>
