Being ablt to truly listen means giving people the space to speak without interruption and taking the time to understand their perspective before responding. It’s about gathering all the information, not rushing to conclusions, and listening with the goal of understanding rather than simply preparing a reply. 

I find that when it comes to having conversations are difficult and decisions are hard, it’s important to lead with empathy. Students and faculty members bring real experiences, emotions, and concerns to the table, and those deserve to be heard and respected. 

My takaway from this section is that leadership legacy is not about titles, authority, or short-term achievements, but about the lasting impact a leader has on people and culture. It is shaped by the values a leader models, the way they treat others, and the opportunities they create for growth and trust. 

It is important to understand situational leadership and determine the best style to use, because different people and situations require different approaches. By recognizing the needs, skills, and motivation of those involved, a leader can adapt their style to provide the right balance of guidance, support, and independence, leading to better outcomes and stronger team performance.

This information will help me focus my energy.

While a manager focuses on processes and efficiency, a leader focuses on people and direction. Although one person can be both a manager and a leader, understanding the difference helps clarify priorities. As a leader, recognizing this distinction allows me to spend less time just controlling tasks and more time motivating, supporting, and empowering others, which ultimately makes me more effective and productive in my role.
