Strict phone usage rules in the classroom are a mandatory so students can focus on respecting the instructors time and lesson. Yes, Gen Y and Z have the urge to be connected and check their phones, however, it is not a necessity. Sometimes technology becomes addicting for everyone. That is how most people know if they send a message or check a post there will be a quick response because the person on the other end also has anxieties about being connected. Reading about the differences in generational approaches to learning makes me better understand why I didn't like/understand how some of my teachers in high school and college went about teaching with a heavy book and making refences using examples that they were passionate about that I had no interest in. It's a matter of adapting and preferred learning/teaching methods. Maybe a survey during the course would help bridge the gap?  

I learned more about the way GenX was raised compared to previous generations and how they adapted to be more self-reliant. I also found it interesting that GenY is more likely to be self-focused and more likely to intertwine work, school, and home life. 

I have learned that coaching is meant to be motivating and a guide to help others better understand the purpose and best practices of their roles and responsibilities. An effective coach is also an advocate for employees who communicate that they are seeking growth opportunities to their manager/director and/or through the quality and consistency of their work.
