I like that this section talks about professional development being needed to know how technology may be utilized. I could not agree with this more! I had never even used Kahoot before I started teaching full time and luckily, we have a very interactive campus that shares all the different technology options there are for learning. The students definitely prefer activities we can do online vs something with a handout. I have noticed that students lose things less when they can be saved and accessed from the computer. I am amazed at the different options available and even our textbook… >>>

I like the statement that a flipped classroom allows students to be more "creative, collaborative, and dynamic." With the use of our ticket to class, it is easy to identify which concepts students understood and which remain muddy. It is also easy to identify who watched the recorded lecture and who did not. We have found that we need to champion the Flipped Classroom structure to students and by about the third week, they actually really like the set up and feel more comfortable knowing a pre-recorded lecture does not mean we are abandoning them.

First- I don't think I knew the definition of pedagogy! Second- I like thinking of the flipped classroom as moving the "homework" to the classroom and the instructor is a "guide on the side." The semester I teach utilizes a flipped classroom and we do experience push back from students. We utilize a Ticket to Class that must be completed before class and recommended to be completed while watching the recorded lecture. My co-instructor re-recorded the lectures for this semester, re-doing a previous instructors work and it's been interesting how much the students are now commenting how funny and interesting… >>>

I like the recommendation to use humor and laugh at ourselves when we make mistakes as instructors. As a nursing instructor, I can have students who have zero medical experience all the way up to LPNs who may have different expertise or more years in the field than me. I learn something from my students every semester, including pronunciation of terminology that I have apparently been saying wrong my whole career! I also really like the statement The only way you can do the right thing well is to do it poorly first. We have labs and clinicals and it… >>>

I like the learning related to monitoring students because it will help educators identify potential issues before there full blown problems. I also like the aspect of making 2-3 second eye contact with students and acknowledging positive interactions in real time. I thought the aspect of an angry student being able to infect other students was interesting. In nursing, i have certainly seen this happen on the floor and it makes sense that it could happen in the classroom. I think making the extra effort to connect with this student, Listen!, and ensuring this student feels heard could go a… >>>

This section was helpful because I am finding my group of students challenging the semester. I liked reading about the breakdown of types of students because I was able to think about my class and which dynamic is at play with which students. I have been already thinking that I need to make my Welcome Letter more specific and bullet pointed and this class just supports this. I also liked what was said about working with discouraged students in making sure to engage with them and maybe even bring in a guest speaker. I also like the idea of asking… >>>

I like that the ice breaker should involve team work. I also particularly like the example with the paper airplanes that works to show them the value of an expert, teamwork, and greater success. I also really liked the video that talked about making students feel comfortable to share without expertise. I think this is very applicable to nursing because there is so much medical terminology that it is easy to feel like you do not know the right word. The example the instructor gave of how she supports students and helps prompt them towards a more complete answer was… >>>
