I use a Calander to plan my assignments, so students are aware of what is planned for the week. However, everything can be subject to change, as in the real working world. Some students thrive on structure.
Hopefully you can approach the student quietly to find out what is the students concern or reason for the behavior. Hopefully work out a plan to help the student.
It is a given that in each classroom every student will have different learning styles, or not a clue. I feel it is important that instructors pay attention and take the student aside. We need to let the student know that we are concerned about grades. We can offer one on one tutoring, extra time on testing.
The first day as well as the first week is very important. Explaining class expectations, skills that will be performed and day that they will be performed unless unexpected changes are needed. Explain grading system and deadlines for assignments.
I introduce myself my years of experience. Ask students about their self, career goals, anything they would like to share. this will " break the ice' and help them become comfortable.
i will be early to class. Make sure all materials are set up for any skills activities.
I will improve my teaching style by implementing more critical thinking skills by being a model to learn from.
