There are many factors which play a role in the retention and academic success of the student.  With real life issues occuring, on top of working to advance in higher education, some students may have difficulty juggling these things, and staying in the game. This is why it is important to take time with each student, to understand what their goals and needs are, in order to encourage them through the completion of what they started.

 

Knowing and respecting my role as an instructor, alongside knowing my students, is extremely important to the success of my students as learners, as well as myself as the instructor.  The instructor sets the tone for the entire learning experience and journey and must to done with clarity, enthusiasm, and care.

Self-respect plays a crucial role in the learning process, development, and success for most students. Instructors are able to help students acquire this attribute by encouraging and motivating them to continue to obtain the knowledge and skills necessary to move forward.  Taking time to acknowledge each student individually and providing them an environment to learn comfortably, without reservations of any kind, sets the stage for maximum success.

Student retention is very important to the establishment as well as the student, which is most important. Every student is unique and requires support and encouragement based on their personal, short-term, and long-term academic needs.  Because of these differences, planning strategies for retaining students must vary for each individual student, while still maintaining a collective format, for active engagement in the learning process.  With this, it is important to understand the background of each of my students, allowing me the opportunity to gain a good rapport with the student, while finding out how their life experiences have shaped their view… >>>
