Activity

Have a physical copy of your lesson plans in the event of your absence (requiring a substitute teacher), technological issues, or for future interviews.

Not all lessons will finish on time, so plan ahead and prepare activities/content for when lessons end earlier than expected.

Build upon responses to questions by asking other students to contribute; do not simply answer the question and move on.

While it is important to teach to students' preferred learning styles, students must also learn how to incorporate other learning styles that may be required of their career field.

In general for the first day of class, it's important to make students feel comfortable and motivated, and that the course will be valuable and enjoyable for them.

Having a checklist helps to make sure the goals of the class for the day are achieved and minimizes the disruptiveness of distractions.

  • Show students how far they've come in reaching their career goals
  • Have students apply what they've learned as soon as possible (boosts motivation)
  • Stay humble- your goal is not to prove that you're the smartest in the room
