Federal guidelines established by U.S. Department of Education are more broad and vague in some respect, however, they allow accreditors to establish additional criteria that requires institutions to demonstrate compliance with both the accreditor standards of accreditation and federal guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Education.

Standards of accreditation are established to help institutions achieve academic excellence, to ensure student success by achieving student outcomes and maintaining eligibility for Title IV funding from the U.S. Department of Education.
