Activity

Encourage creativity and fostering a positive relationship with students in the key to assisting emotionally intelligent students.  Having a one on one conversation with them and hearing about their lives and successes or challenges is so important for their growth and development.

Being aware of the situation and seeking support from others (both professional-if needed or just talking to a friend or coworker); working out or going for a walk always helps too.  Using resources and keeping focused on the task at hand always helps too.

Resilience is building relationships to support students; for some it is easier than for others due to life experiences, overcoming challenges and general drive towards success.  It can be managed and supported through positive and negative experiences, coaching, encouraging and rewarding students through various means.

Students may not understand the concepts and see the value; being intentional and teaching SEI and setting examples can also be a barrier to students accepting and being open to SEL.

SEL examples at our school are:

1. Taught and demonstrated through SkillsUSA "Career Essentials" training.

2.  Soft skills explained and practiced within the classroom setting (shaking hands, getting ready for job shadows, etc.)

3.  SEL is demonstrated and students are exposed to advisory meetings, making connections through job interview and other soft skill explanations.

The definition of SEL is when students connect with others through positive relationships, work to achieve goals, show empathy to others and have a healthy identity.
