In my active reading class, we use the term intertextuality to have students make connections between and among different texts (with texts being defined as anything you "read").  It is fun to watch them engage their schema to find additional meaning in texts, and then be encouraged to "go out" and find additional resources to help them more fully understand what they are reading.  I'm glad you have found such good scaffolding tools to use.

I find that those pre-tests can be used later in the course to show a student how far they've come. In my legal classes I use this a lot. In particular, I use a pre-test in contracts with just one test question - "What is a contract?" As we go through the course, I have them pull out their answers from the first day, and we as a class add to that definition based on what we have been covering. As a paralegal instructor we may be required by the American Bar Association to provide synchronous instruction with students in classrooms and online. This is going to be a real challenge for the blackboard writing crowd of lawyers teaching in these programs. Any thoughts on how to make a smooth transition with instructors who have a hard time walking away from the lectern and whiteboard?
